Through this course, the members will be able to have a closer understanding of what visual poetry is. The final will comprise a collection of original visual work based on the texts. This course will also show how significantly the Japanese artist-poets contributed to this worldwide movement in art and literature.

-understanding the components of visually creative work
| 1 | Introduction, overview, class organization, explanation of final assignment. Definitions of visual poetry. The final for this semester will not be an essay, but instead, a collection of visual works completed from weekly assignments for this class. For this final, you will write an introduction to your manuscript. Assignment 1: Lexical Exquisite Corpse, writing in the style of western surrealism, juxtaposition. Writing a short story based on the EC result |
| 2 | Viewing visual poetry Anachronistically in Japanese culture. Japanese style awase juxtaposition. Saint Kūya Buddhist sculpture; Basho Matsuo Kare eda, crow haiku + calligraphy + sumie illustration (+washi paper). Assignment 2: creating a multimedia work |
| 3 | Highly imagistic lexical verse, haiku (Matsuo Basho, Takeda Santoka); Nishiwaki Junzaburo & his claim that haiku is the Japanese version of surrealism proceeding it. Assignment 3: to write a short poem in the vein of surrealism, as in Paul Eluard |

An interest in art and poetry is necessary, but class members need not be artists or poets to take this class.
