Notes

【Course Objectives】

The purpose is to facilitate English learning - reading, speaking, listening, writing - through various class activities. Students are also encouraged to explore the background knowledge of each story.

【Course Contents】

The Heiress is a woman's coming-of-age story set in the nineteenth century American high society. In this era, a woman played only the traditional role of a wife and mother, and was expected to conform to the social norms of domesticity and respectability. However, the young female protagonist was socially clumsy and shy, even though skillful interaction with people around her was necessary for her to socialize and appeal to a love interest. As regards "The Fall of Edward Barnard", the author W. Somerset Maugham depicted the inner conflict of his main characters due to a triangle love. Students are required to prepare the assigned reading, participate in class activities, and write a short comment at the end of each class. An oral presentation (at least two minutes) is also required.
