【Course Objectives】

This course aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to Modernist drama, and focus specifically on the full-length English stage plays of Samuel Beckett: Waiting for Godot (1955), Endgame (1958), and Happy Days (1961). Further course objectives include improvement in discussion skills, and the acquisition of a wider analytical vocabulary.

【Course Contents】

This course will closely examine the full-length plays of the major Irish writer Samuel Beckett (1906-1989). Discussion will include detailed accounts of three of Beckett's most famous revolutionary works for the stage, but will also consider broader definitions of literature and twentieth century artistic experimentation to help familiarise students with the central tenets of Modernism. The course will be supported by examining some of the numerous productions of Beckett's plays on DVD and online.
