【Course Objectives】

This course aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the modernist novel, and focus specifically on the final major prose works of Samuel Beckett: Company (1980), Ill Seen Ill Said (1982) and Worstward Ho (1983). Further course objectives include improvement in discussion skills, and the acquisition of a wider analytical vocabulary.

【Course Contents】

This course will closely examine the final major prose works of the major Irish writer - Samuel Beckett (1906-1989). Discussion will include detailed accounts of Beckett’s most celebrated late prose works - Company (1980), Ill Seen Ill Said (1982) and Worstward Ho (1983), and will also consider broader definitions of literature and twentieth century artistic experimentation to help familiarise students with the central tenets of Modernism.
