This course will have two goals: 1) to introduce students to the study of comparative literature and 2) to read various literary works written in English and compare them.
In this class, students will develop their understanding of comparing texts and of comparative literature. Discussion topics will include, but will not be limited to, gender issues, class conflict, and racial/ethnic conflict. Students will read texts from American literature, focusing on the genres of Modernism and Post-Modernism. Students will be asked to draw comparisons between specific stories and poems as well as the characters and the situations in the stories. They may also make comparisons between the authors that wrote the stories and poems.
