Notes

【Course Objectives】

Through this course, the members will be able to have a closer understanding of what visual poetry is. The final will comprise a collection of original visual work based on the texts. This course will also show how significant the Japanese artist-poets contributed to this worldwide movement in art and literature.

-analysis of visually poetic work
-understanding the components of visually creative work

【授業計画 / Course Schedule】

1 Review of Spring semester; comments on results of final collections, introducing second semester contents
2 Ways of defining and interpreting Concrete & Visual Poetry; reading Andrew Campana’s introduction
3 Breaking down the introduction visually in pairs, short presentations
4 Analysis of work by Yoshizawa Shoji, assignment in that artist's style
5 Analysis of the Shishi 「視詩」 group's works
6 Calligrams & related (Appolinaire & Aram Saroyan)
7 Mail art with John Solt & Ryosuke Cohen
8 Works by Shikama Hiroko & Nakamura Keiichi
9 Recent outstanding new work by Ishikawa Kyuyo & Sound poetry
10 Asemic writing, calligraphy without literal characters; unconscious of meaningful signs
11 Yoko Ono introduction, “Listen, the snow is falling”; Grapefruit
12 Fluxus introduction via short performances; background of Fluxus
13 Class members conduct and participate in original Fluxus-inspired “instructional poems”
14 Visual works exhibition with oral performances of respective classmates’ works. Hand in final assignment of works collected from this semester, Visual Exquisite Corpse (artistic version)
