Notes

【Course Objectives】

The purpose is to facilitate English learning - listening, reading, writing, speaking - through various class activities. Students are also encouraged to explore the background knowledge of each story.

【Course Contents】

The Children's Hour is concerned with two female educators' resistance to gender stereotype ad prejudice of their society. Class discussion will focus on the convention of femininity and homophobia in mid-20th century America. "Steady Customer" and "The Grocery Store" were written by Bernard Malamud, a Jewish-American author, and his characters in the two short stories found hope and dignity under difficult circumstances. Students are required to prepare the assigned reading, participate in class activities, and write a short comment at the end of each class. An oral presentation (at least two minutes) is also required.
