【Course Objectives】

As outlined in the curriculum map, this seminar aims at cultivating students' reading comprehension skills in order to form a solid basis for their future studies. In particular, it focuses on expanding students' vocabulary and polishing their understanding of the grammatical structure of the English texts.

【Course Contents】

Murder and crime are motifs that appear in many literary works, not just in detective fiction. In this seminar, students will strengthen their basic ability to appreciate literary works in English by closely reading short stories with this theme, especially those that are humorous and witty. Just because a work is characterised by laughter and wordplay does not mean that all the works covered in this seminar are frivolous. Roald Dahl's dark humour, for example, contains elements that demand the reader's careful reflection. Moreover, the deadpan comedy of Magnus Mills gives us a taste of the colloquial language of contemporary Britain. It is hoped that this course will not only improve your English reading skills, but also help to deepen your interest in the literature of the English-speaking world.
