Through close reading of short and medium-length stories in English, students will develop the reading skills essential for their future studies and research. This course focuses on building a broad vocabulary and deepening their understanding of English sentence structures while mastering close reading techniques.
We will read three stories set in different regions of the United States: New York City on the East Coast, a fictional town in California on the West Coast, and a small town in the South. In each story, the depiction of food plays a significant role. Rather than focusing solely on the plot, we will carefully examine the authors’ word choices and stylistic expressions.
Each week, class discussions will assume that all students have closely read the assigned sections in advance. During class, we will refine our close readings together, sharing insights and deepening our understanding. The first session will include an orientation on how to prepare for weekly readings.

英語で書かれた短編・中編の物語の精読を通して、これからの学修や研究を進めていく上で拠り所となる読解力の養成を目指します。特に広汎な語彙力の形成、英文構造の理解を念頭に、精読の方法を習得していきます。

アメリカ東海岸最大の都市ニューヨーク、西海岸カリフォルニアの架空の町、そして、南部の小さな町をそれぞれ舞台にした3つの作品を読みます。いずれも、「食」の描写が重要な役割を果たしている作品です。それぞれの作品を、話の筋だけでなく、言葉の選択、表現のレベルで丁寧に読み込んでいきます。毎週、履修者全員が決められた範囲を精読してきたという前提で授業を行います。授業では、みんなで理解を共有し合いながら、精読の仕上げをします。毎週の予習の仕方については、初回のオリエンテーションで説明します。
