Students in this course will develop the ability to read English texts accurately and to express their interpretations persuasively and logically. At the same time, the course aims to introduce them to the diverse cultures and histories of the English-speaking world, as well as to the pleasures of reading literature.
In this course, students will read modern and contemporary English short fiction, with particular emphasis on developing the ability to read English texts accurately. Through works by writers from diverse backgrounds, the course also explores the breadth of English literature beyond England and its historical contexts.
Students are expected to complete a close reading of the assigned section before each class. After the designated presenter summarises the passage and offers key annotations and interpretive points, the class as a whole will discuss the issues raised. After each session, all students will submit a reaction paper.

英語のテクストを正確に読解する能力、及びテキストについての自らの解釈を説得的かつ論理的に表現する能力を養う。また、英語圏の多様な文化・歴史に親しむと同時に、文学を読む楽しみに触れる。
Students in this course will develop the ability to read English texts accurately and to express their interpretations persuasively and logically. At the same time, the course aims to introduce them to the diverse cultures and histories of the English-speaking world, as well as to the pleasures of reading literature.
本授業では、近現代の英語圏短編小説を読解する。特に英文を正確に読解する能力の向上を重視する。また、多様な背景を持つ作家の作品を通じて、イングランドに限定されない英語圏文学の広がりとその背後の歴史を学ぶ。
本授業は、テクストの音読とその和訳を中心とする輪読形式で進め、各回受講者全員が発言・参加する形を取る。授業後には、全員にリアクションペーパーを提出してもらう。学期中に2回、それまで学び議論した内容を確認する小テストを行う。また、最終回には、授業で取り上げなかった英文を用いて、読解力を測る筆記テストを行う。
