Upon completion of this course, students are expected to improve their English vocabulary and grammatical competence as well as to advance the ability of critical reading through the close reading of literary works in English.
In this course, students will read closely three short stories by Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923), a writer known for her sensitive psychological descriptions, dealing with adolescence, adulthood, and old age, respectively. Even though students will translate the reading materials into Japanese by rotation, there will be no duty roster in advance but all the students are expected to contribute effectively in the class every week.
Students will also take mini tests during the semester to review the course’s reading materials, and at the final week, they will take a written exam, dealing with a different text by the same author, to assess their reading comprehension.

この授業では、英語で書かれた文学作品を原文で精読することを通じ、語彙力と文法力を養うとともに、作品を批評的に味わう力を育てることを目標とする。
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to improve their English vocabulary and grammatical competence as well as to advance the ability of critical reading through the close reading of literary works in English.
繊細な心理描写に定評のある作家キャサリン・マンスフィールド（1888-1923）による、思春期、青年期、老年期をそれぞれ扱った3編の短編を取り上げて、精読する。輪番形式で訳読を行うが、事前に当番を決めることはせず、毎回履修者全員でテクストの文法構造・語彙・物語の背景などを検討する。
学期中に2回、授業で扱った作品の振り返りとなる小テストを実施するとともに、最終授業時には同じ作家による授業では扱わなかった文章を取り上げて、読解力を測る筆記試験を行う。
