This course aims to improve English reading comprehension and oral reading skills while fostering a broader vocabulary and a thorough understanding of English sentence structures. At the same time, it seeks to refine Japanese writing skills through close and thoughtful reading of English literary works.
This course involves a close reading of the prose works of American author Willa Cather (1873–1947). The class will collaboratively translate and read her works, carefully going through a few pages each session. While the primary focus is on improving English reading comprehension, supplementary explanations, such as interpretations of the text and relevant historical background, will be provided as needed.
The course will be conducted in a round-robin format, involving oral reading of the English text and its translation into Japanese, with participation from all students. There will be no assigned turns, so weekly preparation is essential. Twice during the semester, short 15-minute quizzes will be given during class to review the sections of the text that have been covered. In the final session, a comprehensive test will be conducted, using a Willa Cather text not previously discussed in class, to assess students’ ability to apply their skills.

毎回全員が参加する演習形式の授業であるため、特別な理由のない限り、毎回の出席を必須とする。
英語読解力と音読能力を高め、より広い語彙形成と英文構造の理解徹底を目指す。同時に、日本語文章力の練磨を心がけながら、英語文学作品を深く味読する訓練を行う。

アメリカ人女性作家ウィラ・キャザー（1873-1947）の散文を精読する。クラス全体で訳読を行ない、毎回数頁を丁寧に読んでいく。英文読解力の向上に主眼を置くが、必要に応じて作品解釈の紹介や歴史的背景等の補足説明も行う。
授業は輪読形式（英語の音読と和訳）とし、常に全員参加型で、当番制を取らない。ゆえに、毎週の予習が必須となる。学期中に2度、授業時間内に読み進めてきた作品テクストの復習として、15分程度の小テストを実施する。最終授業時には、授業では取り上げなかったCatherのテクストを用い、応用問題による最終テストを行う。
