This course aims to closely read short stories related to World War I. Through the study of English literature, students will enhance their comprehension of English texts and expand their vocabulary, thereby deepening their appreciation of works of English literature.
Each week, students will carefully read a specified portion of a short story related to World War I, ultimately completing three to four stories. While aiming to improve English comprehension, students will also train themselves to consider how literary works depict issues faced by individuals and society through close reading. Rather than assigning readers in advance, the class will proceed with a reading in turn. However, all students will be encouraged to speak at least once per session; therefore, do not neglect your preparation. When preparing, do not be satisfied with merely reading the English; also consider the meaning each sentence conveys in the work. Throughout the semester, short quizzes will be given to assess both English proficiency and comprehension of the works. Additionally, on the final day of class, a written test will be administered using English passages not covered in class to assess reading comprehension.

第一次世界大戦に関係する短篇小説を精読する。英語で書かれた文学の精読を通して、英文の理解力、語彙力の増強を図り、英語文学作品を深く味わう訓練を行う。
This course aims to closely read short stories related to World War I. Through the study of English literature, students will enhance their comprehension of English texts and expand their vocabulary, thereby deepening their appreciation of works of English literature.
第一次世界大戦に関係する短篇小説を毎週適当な分量を指定して精読し、最終的に３本から４本の短篇を読み切る。英文の理解力向上を目指すと同時に、精読を通して文学作品がいかに個人や社会が抱える問題を描いているかを考える訓練も行う。あらかじめ担当者を決めるのではなく、授業中の指名によって輪読形式で進めるが、毎回、受講者全員に少なくとも一度は発言を促すので、予習を怠らないこと。予習の際には、英語を読むことだけで満足せずに、一文一文が作品において持つ意味も考えてくること。学期中に読んだ短篇に関する、英語力と作品の理解度を問う小テストを実施する。また、最終授業日にて、授業では取り上げなかった英文を用いて、読解力を測る筆記試験を行う。
