The aim of this course is to develop students’ vocabulary and reading comprehension through the close reading of relatively accessible short stories written in English, and foster their ability to appreciate literary works from a critical perspective.
In this course, students will closely read three short stories by Diana Wynne Jones, a writer well known for her fantasy fiction, which focus on the imagination and agency of female (young female) protagonists.
Students will translate the reading materials into Japanese by rotation. However, reading assignments will not be fixed in advance. Instead, all students will work together to examine grammatical structures and vocabulary and to discuss what the text tells.
During the semester, student will take two short quizzes to review the reading materials, and at the final week, they will take a written exam, dealing with a different text by the same author to assess their reading comprehension skills.

この授業では、英語で書かれた比較的平易な短編小説を精読することで、語彙力と読解力を養うとともに、文学作品を批評的に鑑賞する能力を育てることを目標とする。
The aim of this course is to develop students’ vocabulary and reading comprehension through the close reading of relatively accessible short stories written in English, and foster their ability to appreciate literary works from a critical perspective.
ファンタジー小説で知られる作家ダイアナ・ウィン・ジョーンズによる、女性（少女）の想像力と主体性について扱った3編の短編を取り上げて精読する。輪番形式で訳読を行うが、事前に当番を決めることはせず、受講者全員で文法構造や語彙を確認し、テキストが何を語ろうとしているのかを検討する。
学期中に2回、授業で扱った作品の振り返りとなる小テストを実施するとともに、最終授業時には同じ作家による授業では扱わなかったテキストを取り上げて、読解力を測る筆記試験を行う。
