This course aims to provide students with opportunities to peruse literary works in English, which are relatively easy and interesting, and improve their English vocabulary and ability to read and comprehend English texts. This will lead to laying the foundation for students to study English and American literature more profoundly from the second year onwards.
Students will read closely a designated amount of chosen English texts (4 relatively recent British short stories), say, about 3 pages every week. In each class, a portion of the used text will be assigned to a student chosen on the spot, instead of assigned beforehand, who will translate it into Japanese as well as reciting and interpreting it. Every student will take part in this activity by turns in a class. A test will be given twice during the term to measure their comprehension of the texts read till then. On the other hand, in the last class, a final test will be given based on texts which were not used in class. This test is to check the improvement of students’ ability to comprehend English in general. Details will be provided in the course syllabus given on the first day of class.

入門講義、入門演習、英米文学概論など1年次春学期に受けた英米文学系科目の復習。毎回扱う短篇小説のテキストを授業前に熟読して準備し（各回約2時間）、授業で得られた知識を参考にして作品を読み直し、推薦された参考文献などにも目を通して内容理解を深める（各回約2時間）。

比較的平易で面白い英語文学作品をじっくり読み、語彙力と英文読解力の向上も図り、それによって2年次以降に英米文学をより深く味わうための土台作りをする。

英語の読み物（比較的最近出版された4篇のイギリス短篇小説）をテキストとして、毎回適当な分量を指定して精読する。予め担当者を決めずに、クラス全員参加を前提として輪読形式で進める。学期中に2回、テキストの英文内容理解を確かめるために小テストを実施する。その一方で、最終授業時に、授業では取り上げなかった英文を素材として、一般的な英文読解力の向上度合いを測る最終テストを行なう。取り上げる読み物と各週に扱う範囲を明示した授業計画表を最初の授業時間に配布。
