【Course Objectives】

Using as the course textbook an anthology of English nation's favourite poems, celebrating various aspects in our life from innocence in childhood, love in youth, marriage, birth, to old age in addition to seasons and landscapes, students will explore whether their feelings are different from ours when celebrating something. Through this exploration, students will find out their own favourite poems of celebration among those in the anthology.

【Course Contents】

In each class, students will read 1-2 pieces selected from an anthology of English Nation's favourite poems of celebration broadcast on a long-running BBC Radio 4 programme Poetry Please!, excluding those to be read in Seminar B1. Through attentive reading, they will find out how various stages of our life and phases of our world are expressed in them, and, at the same time, reflect on their own position--past, present and future--in this world.
Many poems featured in class are not widely known in Japan, so students are expected to read and interpret the words on the page on their own. Multiple students will be assigned to each poem, and each student will prepare handouts and present on their assigned poem. Students not presenting will use this information to engage in active debate regarding the work. Students can expect to present 3-5 times over the course of the semester. The exact number is subject to change depending on the number of participants in the course. Details will be provided in the course syllabus given on the first day of class.
