We are surrounded by various kinds of desire in life. Among others, those related to love tend to influence us most. In this seminar, using as the course textbook an anthology of English nation's favourite poems of desire in such different forms as first love, unrequited love, heterosexual or homosexual love and lost love, we will explore whether British and American people are different from us when expressing their desires for love. Through this exploration, students will find out their own favourite poems of desire among those in the anthology.
In each class, we will read 1-2 pieces selected from an anthology of English Nation's favourite poems of desire broadcast on a long-running BBC Radio 4 programme Poetry Please!, excluding those to be read in Seminar B1 in the spring semester. Through attentive reading, we will find out how diverse aspects of our desire for love are expressed in them, and, at the same time, reflect on what our own desire might be. Many poems featured in class are not widely known in Japan, so students are expected to read and interpret the words on the page on their own. Multiple students will be assigned to each poem, and each student will prepare handouts and present on their assigned poem. Students not presenting will use this information to engage in active debate regarding the work. Students can expect to present 3-5 times over the course of the semester. The exact number is subject to change depending on the number of participants in the course. Details will be provided in the course syllabus given on the first day of class.

これまでに授業などで読んだ英詩を再読しておく。毎回扱う詩を授業の前に熟読して準備し（各回約2時間）、授業の後には紹介された関連文献も参照して詩を再読し内容理解を深める（各回約2時間）。毎回Googleドライブにアップロードされる音声・映像・動画資料を授業の前後に視聴すると学習効果が高まる。

われわれ人間はさまざまな欲望に取り巻かれて生きている。その中でもとりわけ恋愛に関わる欲望は人生に大きな影響を与える。初恋、片思い、異性愛、同性愛、失恋など様々な形の欲望の表われを描く英米詩のアンソロジーを教科書として、恋愛にまつわる欲望の表現方法が英米人とわれわれで違っているかどうか比較しつつ、自分が最も好む欲望の詩を見つけ出す。

BBCラジオ4の長寿番組Poetry Please!で放送された欲望の詩を集めたアンソロジーから、春学期の演習B1で扱わない詩を毎回1，2篇選んで精読し、主に恋愛にまつわる欲望の諸相が詩の中でどのように描かれているかを探りながら、われわれ自身の欲望のあり方についても考える。日本で紹介されていない詩も多く、毎回自力での格闘が必要とされる。一つの詩を必ず複数の担当者に予め当てて、配付資料を準備してそれぞれ発表してもらい、それを糸口にして参加者全員で活発な討論を行なう。学期中の発表担当回数は参加人数によって多少変わるが、一人3-5回程度の予定。最初の時間に詳しい授業計画表を配布。
