Upon completion of this course, students will:
1) acquire high-level reading ability of English to read the original text of Shakespeare’s play.
2) improve their research skills as well as presentation skills by carrying out in-class presentations about the historical background and contexts of Early Modern English drama and the play, Julius Caesar.
3) acquire the interpretational ability to examine literary texts from the critical point of view.
In ancient Roman history, the assassination of Julius Caesar (44 BC) was a key event that triggered the transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. Shakespeare’s Roman drama, Julius Caesar, which deals with this crucial incident, is also a drama of discussion in which people with different political views fight for their justices, with no clear answer as to who is right until the end. Written in the last years of Elizabeth I’s reign, when its political climate was instable, this play presents a searching critique of the political situations of Tudor England, even though it deals with ancient Roman history. The same contemporariness could be applied to the present day.
In this class, students will read Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar closely in a seminar style. More concretely, students will give presentations by rotation and then have group discussions on the them to deepen their understanding of the play with each other.

現代英語とは少々異なるシェイクスピア時代の初期近代英語に取り組む意欲が求められる。
この授業では、以下を到達目標とする。
①シェイクスピアの戯曲を原文で読める高度な英語読解力を涵養する。
②初期近代イングランド演劇や『ジュリアス・シーザー』という作品の歴史的背景や文脈を調べて発表することで、調査力とプレゼンテーション能力を身につける。
③演劇テクストの作法を学び、作品を批評的な観点から読解する解釈能力を涵養する。
Upon completion of this course, students will:

古代ローマ史において、ジュリアス・シーザー（ユリウス・カエサル）の暗殺（44 BC）は共和制から帝政への契機となった重要な事件である。この事件を扱ったシェイクスピアのローマ史劇『ジュリアス・シーザー』は、異なる政治的立場の者たちがそれぞれの正義をたたかわせる弁論劇でもあり、誰が正しいのかについて最後まで明確な答えは出ない。エリザベス一世の治世の晩年、その政治体制が揺らいでいた時に書かれた本作品は、古代ローマ史を扱いながらテューダー朝イングランドの政治状況に対する提言になっていたのだが、同じことは現代にも当てはまるだろう。
この授業では、シェイクスピアの『ジュリアス・シーザー』を演習形式で精読する。具体的には、受講者が輪番で発表を行うとともに、その内容についてグループ・ディスカッションを行い、互いの理解を深めていく。
