【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

この授業では、シェイクスピアのロマンス劇『冬物語』を精読し、以下のような学びを得ることを目標とする。
1. 初期近代英語を読む力をつける。
2. 初期近代イングランド演劇に関する基本的な知識を身につける。
3. 文学作品を批評的に読み、それを発信する力を身につける。

The objective of this course is that, through the close reading of one of Shakespeare's romances, The Winter's Tale, students will improve their abilities as follows:
1. Students will improve their reading ability of Early Modern English.
2. Students will acquire basic knowledge of Early Modern theatre.
3. Students will cultivate the capacity for the critical reading of a literary text and express themselves about it.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

シェイクスピア後期のロマンス劇である『冬物語』の原文を演習形式で精読する。毎回、担当者による発表を行うとともに、受講者全員で作品に関するディスカッションを行う。

『冬物語』は、最終幕における奇跡的な大団円に象徴されるような寓話性をもちながら、そういった劇中の出来事に対する登場人物たちの心理をリアリスティックに描いた喜劇である。この授業では、奇跡や神託といった宗教的モチーフとともに、家父長制に基づく共同体の維持がどのようにありうるのかというこの喜劇の問いについて、受講者とともに考える。

Students will closely read the original text of one of Shakespeare's late romances, The Winter’s Tale, in a seminar style. Each week, assigned students will make their presentations on the work and, then, all students in the course should participate in the discussion.

As symbolized most notably by a miraculous reconciliation in the final scene, the play has a strong allegorical quality. At the same time, it depicts with striking realism the characters’ psychological responses to each dramatic event. In this course, students will examine how religious motifs such as miracles and oracles function within the play, and will consider its question of how communities grounded in patriarchy may be sustained or transformed.

受講者は、毎回の授業で扱う予定の範囲のテキストを事前に読み、自分なりの解釈や疑問点をまとめておくこと。また、担当者は該当箇所についての解釈・ポイントを整理した配布資料を作成することとする（各回約2時間）。授業後は配布資料を読んで理解を深めること（各回約2時間）。
