Upon completion of this course, which deals with Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, students will not only develop their understanding of the critical and reception history of classic literary works but also improve their ability to articulate their interpretation as well as presentation skills.
In this course, students will learn the reception of Shakespeare's play, Julius Caesar, the reading material in the spring term, by reading critical essays on it, watching its performances, and having group discussions about them every week. The play's question of whether there is justice in forestalling the possibility of dictatorship through assassination has attracted intellectuals who lived in the political turbulence, such as in France in the ancient régime and in Japan in the Meiji period. The play has continued to be performed and adapted until the present day.
Students are required to find their own interpretations of the play by studying the history of its reception, and in the final weeks of the course, each group should carry out a reading performance of the play's excerpt and evaluate each other's performance.

この授業では、シェイクスピアの『ジュリアス・シーザー』を題材に、古典作品の批評史や受容史を理解するとともに、自らの作品解釈を言語化して発表する力を育てることを目標とする。
Upon completion of this course, which deals with Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, students will not only develop their understanding of the critical and reception history of classic literary works but also improve their ability to articulate their interpretation as well as presentation skills.
この授業では、春学期に精読したシェイクスピアの戯曲『ジュリアス・シーザー』がどのように受容されてきたかを、作品に関する多様な批評や上演などに触れ、毎回グループ・ディスカッションを行うことで、多角的に理解する。暗殺というかたちで独裁の目を摘むことに正義はあるのかというこの作品の問題提起は、絶対王政期のフランスや明治期の日本など大きな政治状況の潮目にあった知識人たちを惹きつけてきたし、現代でも上演やアダプテーションが途切れることはない。
受講生はこうした受容史を学ぶことで自らの解釈を見つけ、また授業の最後にはグループごとに作品の一部をリーディング・パフォーマンスとして発表することで、自分たちの解釈を表現するとともに、互いにそれを評価し合う。
