The objectives of this course are to read critical essays about The Winter's Tale, and to watch and discuss performance videos and films version of the play, in order to gain a more concrete understanding of the significance of the literary text in the present day from a cultural, historical context.
Because of its rich allegorical quality, The Winter’s Tale has been produced with a wide range of interpretation. In particular, how directors have staged the final scene, in which the supposedly dead queen appears as a statue and is restored to life, offers important insights into the visual imagination of theatre and how it can produce a sense of reality for the audience. In this course, students will review major criticism of the play, examine the productions in Japan and the UK, and discuss the significance of the adaptations. Each student will give a presentation at the end of the semester on an adaptation of the play, based on their interpretations of the performance they studied in the course.

この授業では、演習B３と同じテキストを扱うが、演習B３での学習内容を前提としていない。
この授業の目標は、『冬物語』の現在までの批評を概観し、この作品の上演や映画等の映像作品を鑑賞、議論することで、文化的・歴史的コンテキストから現代において文学テキストが持つ意味を、より具体的に理解することである。

『冬物語』はその高い寓意性ゆえに、これまで多様な解釈のもとで上演されてきた。とりわけ、彫像となった亡き女王が「生き返る」最終幕の場面をどのように演出するかは、演劇がもつ視覚的想像力と、それが観客にどのような現実的な影響をもたらすのかという問いについて、重要な示唆を与えてくれる。この授業では、この劇についてのこれまでの批評を概観したうえで、国内外における上演を鑑賞し、そのアダプテーションの意義についてディスカッションを行う。また、それぞれの上演の解釈をふまえ、『冬物語』のアダプテーションについて、学期末に各自がプレゼンテーションを行う。
