【Course Objectives】

This year, we will conduct close readings of two post-WWII British dystopian novels. The “dystopian novel" is the antithesis of the “utopian novel", which pursues the ways to establish and maintain an ideal world. Dystopian novels depict, through the author's imagination, a world where social systems become hard to maintain due to wars and disasters, or one where suppressive social systems pose heavy limits to human freedom. Well-written dystopian novels go beyond mere fevered imagination and gives a sense of fictional reality to the reader through acute observations of the weaknesses and vices inherent in human beings.

In the spring semester, we will read Heroes and Villains by Angela Carter, one of the foremost writers of British “magic realism". Its stage is set in a desolate near-future filled with a sense of an imminent end of the world. The plot is concerned with a young girl who lives in a closed community but, through an encounter with an “alien”, starts to search for a world outside the limit of the community. The major themes of the novel are growth, otherness, and confinement and escape.

【Course Contents】

The works will be divided into 12 sections.

A presentation team and a question team for each session will be appointed. All students will be assigned at least one presentation and one question task during the semester. The responsibilities of each team are as follows:

Members of the presentation team will work together to create a presentation containing (1) a summary of the assigned part of the text (2) notes to aid the understanding of the work [cultural and historical background, definitions of proper nouns, etc. and (3) an analysis of the assigned part. The presentation team must send their handout to both the question team and the teacher before the class session. The presentation team members will distribute their handout to the remainder of students on the day of the class and make a presentation.

The question group will read the handout in advance and prepare questions to improve the class’ understanding of the work. After the presenting group finishes their presentation, members of the question group will provide their questions to the presenters.

All students will be asked to write several response papers over the duration of the course.
