Notes

【Course Objectives】

This year, we will conduct close readings of two post-WWII British and Nigerian political novels (Nigeria, which had been under British colonial rule, became independent in 1960). Note that the word 'political' here extends to things related to politics in its widest sense.

The main purposes of this course are for you to: 1) develop an ability of English that makes it possible for you to read novels that deal with the sphere of politics, 2) acquire an attitude of reading that delves into the socio-cultural elements behind the text and 3) to become able to write academically about the works you have read.

【Course Contents】

No Longer at Ease (1960) is a sequel to Things Fall Apart, a novel which made Chinua Acebe renowned worldwide. While it can be read as a self-contained novel, it will certainly help your understanding to read Things Fall Apart beforehand in English or Japanese Translation.

The hero of the novel leaves his native Nigerian village to be educated in the UK, and then returns to Nigeria to join the colonial civil service. However, the political reality of Nigeria is contrary to his idealism. No Longer at Ease delves deeply into the problems of colonialism, as well as the confrontation of idealism and realism in politics.

The work will be divided into 12 sections.

A presentation team and a question team for each session will be appointed. All students will be assigned at least one presentation and one question task during the semester. The responsibilities of each team are as follows:

Members of the presentation team will work together to create a presentation containing (1) a summary of the assigned part of the text (2) notes to aid the understanding of the work [cultural and historical background, definitions of proper nouns, etc. and (3) an analysis of the assigned part. The presentation team must send their handout to both the question team and the teacher before the class session. The presentation team members will distribute their handout to the remainder of students on the day of the class and make a presentation.

The question group will read the handout in advance and prepare questions to improve the class’ understanding of the work. After the presenting group finishes their presentation, members of the question group will provide their questions to the presenters.

All students will be asked to write several response papers over the duration of the course.
