This course will foster students’ ability to create summaries, show them how to craft logical opinions, and teach them techniques for performing close readings of American literature. In addition to improving students’ English ability, this course will also provide them with knowledge of American literature and culture.
This course offers an in-depth exploration of Truman Capote's works, focusing on the rich complexities of his storytelling. In the spring semester, we will closely analyze his short stories, while in the fall semester, we aim to complete his early novel,Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948).
Through these texts, we will engage with themes of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality, connecting the issues raised in Capote’s writing to broader societal concerns that remain relevant today. By considering Capote's use of language and literary techniques, we will also deepen our appreciation of his craft.
Finally, the course will situate Capote’s works within the cultural and historical context of post-World War II America, helping students build a comprehensive understanding of the era's influence on his literature.

受講者の人数によって詳細を決めますが、毎回数人ずつのグループに担当を割り当て、各回のリーディングの内容を要約し、考察を書いたものをプリントで配布していただきます。担当者はしっかりとテクストを精読し、疑問点、留意点をまとめたプリントを用意すること。それを踏まえて、全員でディスカッションをし、テクストに対する理解をクラス全員で共有します。
英語で書かれた文学作品を精読する技術と、要約する能力、論理的に自らの意見や考えをアウトプットできる能力を養う。英語力の向上を目指すと同時に、アメリカ文学・文化に関する幅広い知識を身につける。

この演習では、Truman Capoteの作品を精読します。カポーティは、オードリー・ヘップバーン主演の映画『ティファニーで朝食を』(1961)の原作者であることで有名ですが、春学期は、彼の短編作品を精読します。そして秋学期は、初期長編Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948)を読破することを目指します。
物語を楽しむだけでなく、作品から浮かび上がる、人種、エスニシティ、ジェンダー、セクシュアリティの問題なども検討しながら、今日にも通じる様々な問題について各自が思考を深められるように取り組みます。
また、第二次対戦後のアメリカ史や文化についての基本的な知識を押さえつつ、様々な言語的工夫にも注意して多角的に作品を味わいます。
