【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

文学作品の精読を通して，他者に対する個人的かつ社会的な想像力を養うとともに，日本語と英語の双方による自己表現能力を高めます。

Through the intensive reading of literary texts, students will cultivate a personally/socially imaginative understanding of those who have different values and backgrounds from their own. In doing so, they will enhance self-expression skills in both Japanese and English.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

　演習B13とセットで開講される半期完結の授業（週2コマ、4単位）ですので、2単位のみの履修はできません。ご注意ください。
　Edith Whartonの諸作品は、過去数十年の間に、ジェンダー・セクシュアリティの規範に抗うテクストとして、フェミニズム批評の視座から再評価が進みました。本演習では、結婚制度や異性愛主義に対するWhartonの抵抗が、ゴシック的な想像力と連動する作品を取り上げます。具体的には、逸脱する夫婦関係に暗い死の影が漂う中編『イーサン・フロム』（1911）と、Whartonがそのキャリアを通して断続的に書き続けた幽霊譚（ghost stories）のいくつかを精読します。
　毎週の授業では、あらかじめ指名された発表者チーム（通常2名）が、用意したレジュメをもとに作品を解説し、クラス全員でまず語学的な疑問を解決します。その後、発表者が事前に担当教員と相談して決めた（作品解釈に関わる）質問への回答を、受講者全員にその場で作文していただきます。それから、作文した回答をもとに、グループ・ディスカッションを行います。質問と回答とディスカッションは、隔週で英語と日本語を用います。さらに、そのディスカッションをふまえ、今度は日本語で、クラス討論を行います。毎週の作文については、次週授業時までに、担当教員がコメントを付して各受講者に返却します。

This is a single-semester course offered in conjunction with Seminar B13 (two 100-minute sessions per week, 4 credits). Please note that it is not possible to register for only 2 credits.
Over the past few decades, Edith Wharton's body of work has undergone a significant re-evaluation through the lens of feminist criticism, being recognized as texts that challenge the norms of gender and sexuality. This seminar focuses on works in which Wharton’s resistance to the institution of marriage and heteronormativity aligns with her Gothic imagination. Specifically, we will engage in close readings of the novella Ethan Frome (1911), where a dark shadow of death looms over a deviating marital relationship, along with several ghost stories that Wharton continued to write intermittently throughout her career.
In each weekly session, a pre-assigned presentation team (typically two students) provides an overview of the assigned text based on their prepared handout. First, the entire class clarifies any linguistic or grammatical questions. Following this, all students are asked to write an on-the-spot response to a specific question (related to the interpretation of the text) that the presenters have prepared in consultation with the instructor. Group discussions are then held based on these written responses. The questions, written responses, and group discussions alternate between English and Japanese every other week. Furthermore, based on these discussions, a whole-class debate is conducted in Japanese. The weekly written responses will be returned to each student with the instructor's comments by the following week's class.

毎週，全員，事前に作品テクストを精読し，疑問点を整理したうえで授業にのぞんでください（疑問は教室で共有して解決するので，疑問の答えは分からなくて構いません）。各回の予習には4時間以上を要します。なお，予習には，KOD（Kenkyusha Online Dictionary）の利用を推奨します。
