【Course Objectives】

Contrary to our 21st-century assumptions, American women poets through the end of the 19th century were widely acclaimed and held in high esteem. However, during the first half of the 20th century, many were marginalized and relegated to the sidelines, as their work was not considered representative of the then-emerging academic discipline of “American Literature.” It was not until the latter half of the 20th century, spurred by a broader movement to recover women’s history, that their contributions began to be re-evaluated.

In this seminar, we will trace the lineage of American women poets from Anne Bradstreet to E. Pauline Johnson. By engaging with and enjoying their poetic worlds, students will aim to integrate the knowledge and methodologies of British and American literature as outlined in the Curriculum Map, ultimately achieving an advanced level of discussion, presentation, and academic writing.

【Course Contents】

Just as the women of the Heian dynasty used kana characters to give voice to the “self” within their waka poetry and narratives, American women poets sought to establish a sense of “self” within their poetry. Tracing the lineage from Anne Bradstreet to E. Pauline Johnson, we find that theirs was not an outward-reaching voice like that of Walt Whitman; rather, it was a voice that sought to drive the roots of a firm “self” deep into the earth, often articulating the precarious circumstances in which they found themselves. In this seminar, we will not only explore these themes but also closely examine and savor the specific language they employed to express their thoughts and emotions.

Furthermore, we will frequently shed light on the American culture and society that surrounded these poets. True understanding of literature is unattainable without a corresponding understanding of its cultural and social contexts.

The seminar will proceed with designated presenters leading the discussion based on prepared handouts. However, those not presenting are also expected to engage proactively and appreciate the texts with a discerning eye.
