【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

　19世紀のアメリカは詩の時代でした。シガニーらの女性詩人やロングフェローらの炉辺詩人が活躍し広く読まれていました。みずから公刊することなく鋭い詩を丁寧に書きためていたディキンソンもいました。けれども19世紀のアメリカ詩をもっとも代表するのはウォルト・ホイットマンです。アメリカやアメリカ人をみずから代弁し、みずから体現さえしようしていたからです。ホイットマンを読むことなく、アメリカ詩やアメリカ文学を語ることはできません。
　そこで本科目では、ウォルト・ホイットマンの詩法と詩想を理解し、ホイットマンの世界を愉しむことによって、カリキュラム・マップに示された「英米文学の知識と方法論を総合」し、高度な「議論・発表・レポート作成」を実現することを目指します。

The 19th century was America’s age of poetry. Female poets such as Lydia Sigourney and fireside poets such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow flourished during this time. Emily Dickinson was also active during this time though many of her sharp-witted poems went unpublished. Among these figures of American poetry, the most significant of the 19th century poets was Walt Whitman. He took it upon himself to speak for America and her people and did his best to personify them. Without reading Whitman’s work, one will not have a sufficient understanding of American poetry or literature.
In this course, students will experience the world of Walt Whitman through understanding his poetic devices and poetic imagination. Students will also work towards the goals of gaining a general understanding of British and American literary methodology and being able to produce high quality, critical presentations and reports as outlined in the curriculum map.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

　秋学期にはホイットマンの代表作というべき「ぼく自身のうた」を読んでいきます。ただし、この作品は長篇詩であるので、重要なセクションを選び出して精読することによって、全貌の理解を図ることとします。分析に当たっては、Ed Folsomによるコメンタリーも参考にする予定。セクションによっては、1855年版と1892年版の対比も重要になります。もちろんホイットマンを取り巻いていたアメリカの文化や社会についても光を当ててゆきます。
　なお本演習は、あらかじめ定められた担当者がハンドアウトに基づいて発表することによって進められます。担当でない参加者もみずからすすんで翫味しなければなりません。

The fall semester will cover Walt Whitman’s iconic work “Song of Myself.” However, due to it being a long-form poem, students will conduct intensive readings of selected vital sections of the work to build their understanding of the whole piece. Ed Folsom’s commentary of the work will be used as a reference for literary analysis. Contrasting sections from the 1855 version and the 1892 version will also be important. Students will learn about the American culture and society that surrounded Whitman and his works.
In this seminar, assigned students will produce handouts and give presentations on the passages and they proceed through the work. Those not presenting must be active and willing participants in appreciating the work.
