By transcribing and reading early books published during the introduction of printing technology in England, students will develop the ability to read directly from primary sources dating from the late fifteenth century onwards.
Students will read the original text of The History of Reynard the Fox, translated from Flemish into English by William Caxton in 1481. At a time when printing technology had only just been introduced to England, punctuation was rarely used and the typeface differed slightly from modern forms; students will engage with the text as it appears in this newly invented typeface.

イギリスに印刷技術が導入された当初に出版された揺籃期本を転写し読むことで、15世紀以降に出版された一次資料を直接読む力をつける。

1481年にウィリアム・キャクストンがフラマン語から英語に翻訳した『狐のレナードの物語』を当時出版されたままのテキストで読む。印刷技術がイギリスに導入されたばかりの頃、パンクチュエーションのほとんど使われていないテキストを、発明されたばかりの活字のまま読み、物語を解釈していく。
