As outlined in the curriculum map, this seminar aims at consolidating the knowledge and methods of the relevant academic discipline in order to enable students to practice various research activities, including discussion, presentation, and essay composition. Specifically, it focuses on an early twentieth-century novel and encourages students to construct an original argument. It is hoped that the seminar further refines students' analytical skills.
E. M. Forster is one of the leading British writers and intellectuals of the 20th century, who published many stories and essays during his long life. Several of Forster's major works have been made into films, and his original works have recently been re-introduced to Japan in the form of new translations, so some of you may already have read or watched some of his works. In this seminar, we will give a close reading of A Room with a View (1908). Set in Italy and England, this love story of a young man and woman has many highlights, including superb comedy, excellent portrayal of people, a keen eye on the class system and an awareness of issues of sexuality. A close reading of this work will give you a better understanding of 20th century British literature and culture and will further enhance your ability to analyse literary works in English.

発表担当時には、事前に指示された通りに個人で準備を進めてもらいます。
授業後には、事後学修として学んだ内容の復習・整理を行い、次回以降のディスカッションに生かせるようにしてください。事後学修にも毎回2時間程度を要します。

授業中にもうけるディスカッションの時間では、自発的に意見や疑問点などを発言していただきます。授業貢献の評価の大部分がこの発言によって決まるので、本科目では高い積極性が求められることに留意してください。
カリキュラム・マップにあるように、該当する学問領域の「知識と方法論を総合し、議論・発表・レポート作成など」の「研究を実践できるようになる」ことを目指します。具体的には、20世紀初頭に書かれた小説を一篇精読し、独自の視点に基づく議論の構築を行うことで、高度な文学作品の分析能力を養います。

E・M・フォースターは20世紀イギリスを代表する作家・知識人の一人であり、その長い生涯のうちに数多くの物語やエッセイを発表しました。フォースターの主要作品は複数映画化されており、その原典も近年新訳の形で日本に再紹介されているので、これまでにいくつかの作品に触れたことのある人も少なくないかもしれません。本演習では、この作家が1908年に出版した長編小説『眺めのいい部屋』を精読します。イタリアとイギリスを舞台とした若い男女の恋愛を描いた本作には、極上のコメディ、精緻な人間描写、階級制度への鋭いまなざし、セクシュアリティの問題への意識など、多くの見どころがあります。本作を精読すれば、20世紀イギリス文学・文化をよりよく理解し、英語で文学作品を分析する力をさらに高めることができるはずです。
