Notes

【Course Objectives】

Students in this course will improve reading comprehension skills through close reading of English literary texts. They will learn to interpret the texts based on their historical and cultural contexts, and to write clear, logical explanations of their ideas.

【Course Contents】

In this course, we will undertake a close reading of Mrs Dalloway (1925), a major work by the British novelist Virginia Woolf (1882–1941). Set over the course of a single day in June 1923, the novel follows Clarissa Dalloway, an upper-class London woman, as she prepares to host a party. Lacking a clear arc of plot development, the work was harshly criticised by Arnold Bennett, the eminent writer of the time, who complained that it offered no “ordered movement towards a climax” and that it “lacked vitality.” Yet the fact that the novel continues to be read a century after its publication is due precisely to Woolf’s pioneering narrative technique that deftly shifts among multiple characters’ perspectives through free indirect discourse. The novel renders the society in interwar Britain and the people who live there, opening up new possibilities for literary expression. In this course, we will examine narrative techniques while also attending to the historical and cultural contexts (post–World War I society, urban space, class, gender, and related issues) to deepen our understanding of the novel in accordance with each student’s interests.

Students are expected to complete a close reading of the assigned section before each class. After the designated presenter summarises the passage and offers key annotations and interpretive points, the class as a whole will discuss the issues raised. After each session, all students will submit a reaction paper.
