As outlined in the curriculum map, this seminar aims at consolidating the knowledge and methods of the relevant academic discipline in order to enable students to practice various research activities, including discussion, presentation, and essay composition. Specifically, it focuses on a post-World War II novel and encourages students to construct an original argument. It is hoped that the seminar further refines students' analytical skills.
Jean Rhys, a renowned female writer of British Dominican origin, moved to the UK in her mid-teens in 1907 and began her writing career based in Europe. Having gained connections with Ford Madox Ford, an influential figure in the literary world at the time, Rhys published a number of novels and short stories during what is known as the ‘inter-war period’. However, it seems undeniable that her well-deserved fame largely rests on Wide Sargasso Sea (1966), which was published after the Second World War. In this work, which tells the life of Bertha Mason, the ‘madwoman in the attic’ in Charlotte Bronte's Jayne Eyre (1847), Rhys, herself a Creole from the colonies, is simply superb. Wide Sargasso Sea is also a work of narrative and stylistic interest, as it is the work of a writer who was actively engaging in writing in the age of modernism. A close reading of this work will not only give you a better understanding of the literature and culture of the country that built the ‘British Empire’, but will also further enhance your ability to analyse literary works in English.

夏季休暇中にシャーロット・ブロンテ『ジェイン・エア』を読了しておくことを薦めます（日本語で構いません）。
カリキュラム・マップにあるように、該当する学問領域の「知識と方法論を総合し、議論・発表・レポート作成など」の「研究を実践できるようになる」ことを目指します。具体的には、第二次世界大戦後に出版された小説を一篇精読し、独自の視点に基づく議論の構築を行うことで、高度な文学作品の分析能力を養います。

イギリス領ドミニカ出身の女性作家であるジーン・リースは、1907年に10代半ばにしてイギリスに渡り、紆余曲折を経たうえでヨーロッパを拠点に執筆活動を始めました。当時の文壇で強い影響力を持っていたフォード・マドックス・フォードとのつながりを得た（この点の詳細は授業で）リースは、二つの大戦にはさまれた「戦間期」と呼ばれる時期にいくつもの小説や短篇を発表しました。しかし彼女がこんにちに至るまで読み継がれている理由は、第二次世界大戦後に出版された『サルガッソーの広い海』（1966）の著者であるからに他ならないでしょう。シャーロット・ブロンテ『ジェイン・エア』（1847）に登場する「屋根裏の狂女」バーサ・メイスンの生涯を語る本作では、自身植民地出身のクレオールであったリースの本領が存分に発揮されています。また、モダニズムの時代に精力的に活動した作家の作品だけあって、『サルガッソーの広い海』は語り、文体の上でも興味深い作品です。本作を精読すれば、「大英帝国」を築き上げたイギリスの文学・文化をよりよく理解するだけでなく、英語で文学作品を分析する力をさらに高めることができるはずです。
