【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

英語文学作品の精読を通して、高度な英語テクストを的確に読み解く力を身につけるとともに、歴史・文化的コンテクストを踏まえつつ独自の観点から作品解釈を提示し、それを論理的に表現・発信する能力を涵養する。

Students in this course will improve reading comprehension skills through close reading of English literary texts. They will learn to interpret the texts based on their historical and cultural contexts, and to write clear, logical explanations of their ideas.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

本授業では、イギリスの小説家ヴァージニア・ウルフ（1882-1941）の代表作 To the Lighthouse (1925)を精読する。スコットランド北部スカイ島の別荘で夏季休暇を過ごす一家を、第一次世界大戦を含む10年という歳月にまたがって描く本作は、前作Mrs Dallowayと同様、強力なプロットを欠くものの、建築にも喩えられる堅固な小説構造と、円熟の文体によって、アーノルド・ベネットをして「最高傑作」と言わしめた、ウルフの一つの文学的到達点である。さらには、両親との愛憎半ばする関係や、喪失の苦しみなどウルフの極めて個人的な記憶に肉薄する半自伝的小説でもある。本授業では、ウルフの高度な語りの技法を検討するだけでなく、作品の歴史的・文化的コンテクスト（第一次大戦前後の社会、都市空間、階級、ジェンダー等）に留意しながら、各自の関心に沿って、作品理解を深める。

受講者は毎回、指定範囲を事前に精読して授業に参加する。各回の担当者が指定範囲の概要・注釈・解釈を発表したのち、提示された論点について、クラス全体で議論を行う。授業後には、全員にリアクションペーパーを提出してもらう。

In this course, we will undertake a close reading of To the Lighthouse (1927), a major novel by the British writer Virginia Woolf (1882–1941). Spanning roughly ten years—including the period of the First World War—the novel portrays a family spending their summer vacation at a villa on the Isle of Skye, northern Scotland. Like Mrs Dalloway, the novel lacks a strong plot, but its firm overall structure and mature prose style have made it one of Woolf’s literary achievements; Arnold Bennett, her archnemesis, even called it her “masterpiece.” The novel is also semi-autobiographical, drawing closely on her deeply personal memories, including her ambivalent feelings toward her parents and her experience of grief and loss. We will examine narrative techniques while also attending to historical and cultural contexts (pre- and post–World War I society, urban space, class, gender, and related issues) to deepen our understanding of the novel in accordance with each student’s interests.

Students are expected to complete a close reading of the assigned section before each class. After the designated presenter summarises the passage and offers key annotations and interpretive points, the class as a whole will discuss the issues raised. After each session, all students will submit a reaction paper.

テクストの一語一語をおろそかにしない綿密な予習が求められる。丁寧に辞書を引き、些細な疑問や違和感を見逃さないこと。
具体的な学修内容として、事前に指定範囲を事前に熟読しておくこと(各回約3時間)。また、授業後には指示する課題を行うこと(各回約1時間)。
