Through a close reading of literary texts, students in this course will improve their skills to read literary texts accurately as well as to analyze them in a critical way.
Melville and the domestic novel may seem an odd combination.
Herman Melville (1819-91), a writer who played a role in American Renaissance in the 19th century, wrote mainly maritime adventure novels from his literary debut in 1846 until the publication of Moby-Dick in 1851. However, Melville changed his style with the publication of Pierre in 1852 and published a series of domestic stories in the 1850s. Why did Melville move from sea stories to land stories? What themes and historical backgrounds are embedded in Melville's domestic stories? With these questions in mind, in this course we will read Melville's domestic fiction, which cover a wide range of thematic concerns, including family relationships and gender/sexuality, the Industrial Revolution and scientific discourse, nature and the picturesque aesthetics, illness and the body, comedy and tragedy, Puritan beliefs, space and architecture, animals and humans, Gothicism, racial issues, spiritualism, money and capitalism, intertextuality, narrative and metafictionality. We will read Melville's three domestic short stories: “Cock-A-Doodle-Doo!” (1853), “I and My Chimney” (1856), and “The Apple-Tree Table” (1856).

担当に当たっていない週も全員が事前に辞書を使いながら作品を精読して授業にのぞんでください。また、授業内の質疑応答やディスカッションに備えて、各自で予習時の疑問点や不明点を書き留めてきてください。
各回の予習・復習にはそれぞれ2時間程度を要します。

「メルヴィルと家庭小説」――と聞けば、何とも奇妙な組み合わせに思われるかもしれません。
〈アメリカン・ルネサンス〉という19世紀文芸隆興の一翼を担った作家ハーマン・メルヴィル（1819-91）は、1846年の文壇デビューから1851年の『白鯨』出版に至るまで主として海洋冒険小説を書き続けました。が、実はメルヴィルは1852年の『ピエール』出版を機に作風を一転させ、1850年代は数多くの家庭小説を紡ぎました。メルヴィルはなぜ海の物語から陸の物語へと移行したのでしょうか？メルヴィルによる一連の家庭小説群にはいかなる問題意識や歴史的背景が埋め込まれているのでしょうか？本授業では、そのような問いを念頭に置きつつ、家族関係やジェンダー／セクシュアリティの主題をはじめ、産業革命と科学言説、自然とピクチュアレスク美学、病気と身体、喜劇性と悲劇性、ピューリタン信仰、空間と建築、動物と人間、ゴシック性、人種問題、心霊主義、貨幣と資本主義経済、間テクスト性、語りとメタフィクショナリティの主題など、実に様々な要素を内包するメルヴィルの家庭小説を読んでみたいと思います。扱う作品は、「コケコッコー！」（“Cock-A-Doodle-Doo!”、1853）、「私と私の煙突」（“I and My Chimney”、1856）、「リンゴ材のテーブル」（“The Apple-Tree Table”、1856）という3つの短篇です。
