Through a close reading of a literary text, students in this course will improve their skills to read literary texts accurately as well as to analyze them.
Faulkner seems in vogue in Japan. Just a glance at the shelves of bookstores shows this fact, for Faulkner's novels in translation have been published one after another recently. Besides, monographs on Faulkner have been published almost every month. Exactly 100 years have passed since William Faulkner (1897-1962) published his first book of poems, The Marble Faun, in 1924. Now, in the midst of this "Faulkner boom," we will take a fresh look at Faulkner's literary world.
In this course, we will closely read Faulkner's fiction, "The Bear" (1842), and examine his literary style with in mind the representation of time and space.
Students will improve their ability to read the text with paying attention to the themes, structure, style, motifs, and rhetoric.

〈フォークナー・ブーム〉到来の気配がする。書店の棚を一瞥するだけでも、『土にまみれた旗』（河出書房新社、2021）、『ポータブル・フォークナー』（河出書房新社、2022）、『フォークナー短編小説集』（英宝社、2022）、『野生の棕櫚』（中央公論新社、2023）というように、フォークナー作品の翻訳が矢継ぎ早に出版されていることが容易に見てとれる。研究書にいたっては毎月のように新刊が出版されている。20世紀アメリカ文学を代表する作家ウィリアム・フォークナー（1897-1962）が1924年に初めて自らの作品（詩集『大理石の牧神』）を出版してからちょうど100年が経ったいま、この〈フォークナー・ブーム〉の只中で、彼の文学世界を改めて見つめてみたい。
本講では、フォークナーの小説「熊」（1942）を精読することで、フォークナーの作風を味わっていく。とりわけ、フォークナー文学における時間と空間の問題を追いかけてみたい。
精読を通し、文学テクストの主題、構成、文体、モチーフ、修辞法等に注目し、作品を分析する力を養うことが本講の目的である。

英語が非常に難解な作品であるため、辞書を丹念に使いながら作品を精読したうえで授業にのぞむこと。
