Through a close reading of literary texts, students in this course will improve their skills to read literary texts accurately as well as to analyze them in a critical way.
In this age of pop songs that cheerfully sing the self, are “dark” novels in which characters wallow in the agony of past sins or carry the grief considered bad for readers' mental health? If so, Nathaniel Hawthorne's novels, combined with the image of his masterpiece, The Scarlet Letter (1850), may be dismissed as a repulsive, dark, dank and unreadable works of sin and despair, an opposite of the self-affirming pop songs of the 21st century.
However, Hawthorne, though normally regarded as a writer of sin, wrote not only stories of sin, but also a wide range of genres. Darkness and sin are not the only key words to decipher Hawthorne's literature. Comicality, humor, nostalgia, and emotionality are also significant for understanding his literary world. In this course, we will consider Hawthorne's multifaceted nature as a writer by reading his short stories written in a variety of styles between the 1830s and 1850s. This process, I hope, will lead students to a positive affirmation of Hawthorne's style by the end of the semester.

担当に当たっていない週も全員が事前に辞書を使いながら作品を精読して授業にのぞんでください。また、授業内の質疑応答やディスカッションに備えて、各自で予習時の疑問点や不明点を書き留めてきてください。
各回の予習・復習にはそれぞれ2時間程度を要します。

文学作品の精読を通し、英語を正しく読む力を養うとともに、文学作品を批評的に分析する力を培います。

「かわいいだけじゃだめですか？」「あたし今最上級に可愛いの」「未来しかないこの感じ（好き！）」と明るく歌い上げる一連のポップソングが流行する昨今、登場人物がひたすら過去の罪に悶え苦しんだり、袋小路に入り込んだような悲哀を背負う「暗い」小説は、精神衛生上よろしくないとされるのでしょうか。とすれば、19世紀のアメリカ人作家ナサニエル・ホーソーン（1804-64）の小説群が、代表作『緋文字』（1850）のイメージも相まって、21世紀的な自己肯定感満載のポップソングとは正反対のベクトルを持った、陰鬱で暗く、じめじめしていて、読むに堪えない〈罪と絶望の文学〉として忌避されたとしても何ら不思議ではありません。
しかし、〈罪の作家〉と目されがちなホーソーンはその実、罪の物語ばかりではなく、多様なジャンルの作品を残しています。重苦しさや罪深さのみがホーソーンを読み解く鍵語ではないのです。喜劇性、ユーモア、ノスタルジア、そして情趣もまた、ホーソーンの文学世界を彩る重要な鍵語なのです。本授業では、1830年代から1850年代にかけて執筆された作風の異なるいくつかの短篇作品を読むことで、ホーソーンという作家の多面性を再確認したいと思います。学期が終わる頃に「ホーソーンのこの感じ（好き！）」と思ってもらえたら何よりです。
