We will read William Somerset Maugham's The Razor's Edge (1944).
We will carefully read The Razor's Edge (1944), one of the best known novels by the English author William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965), whose revaluation is recently under way in Japan. The main character Larry, traumatized by his experiences in WWI, goes through various human relationships in search of the meaning of life. Central is his visit to India where he has a significant spiritual turn. We will consider such fundamental questions as what the East means for the West or whether love is more important in life than money, as well as enjoying Maugham's masterful story telling. We will also appreciate Maugham's English, which used to be regarded as useful in teaching English.

日本でも近年再評価されつつあるイギリスの小説家William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965)の著名な長編小説 The Razor's Edge (1944)を精読します。第一次世界大戦のトラウマを背負った主人公は、人生の意味を求めて放浪し、インドに行って精神的に重要な経験をします。西洋にとって東洋が何を意味するか、人生において重要なのは愛か富か、といった根源的な問題を、稀代のストーリーテラーであるモームの物語を楽しみながら考えましょう。またかつてしばしば英文解釈の教材とされたモームの英語そのものも味わいます。
