This course aims to deepen our understanding of the nineteenth-century English novel by reading Thomas Hardy's masterpiece Jude the Obscure (1895).
Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) is well known as a representative novelist in the late Victorian period. By reading his final novel, Jude the Obscure (1895), we will try to have a deeper understanding of the society and customs of England in the nineteenth century. Also by following the narrative of the unfortunate life of the hero Jude, we will consider the difficult position of working-class people at that time as well as some profound questions like the meaning of life or love. Questions concerning education, morality and marriage will be relevant, too. Even though the setting and age in the novel are distant from ours, there must be universal insights into life that appeal to us today, and we will try to explore them.

This course aims to deepen our understanding of the nineteenth-century English novel by reading Thomas Hardy's masterpiece Jude the Obscure (1895).
Thomas Hardy (1840-1928)はイギリス19世紀末の代表的な小説家として知られています。彼の最後の長編小説Jude the Obscure (1895)を読むことを通じて、まず19世紀イギリスの社会や風俗について理解を深めます。また、主人公Judeの挫折続きの人生の物語を味わいながら、当時の労働者が置かれた難しい立場に思いをはせ、階級、教育、道徳、結婚などのトピックに即して人生とは何か、愛とは何か、などの根本的な問題を、小説家Hardyの世界観とともに考察していきます。時代と社会が違っても、現代を生きる私たちに通じる、人生への普遍的な洞察があるはずであり、それがどんなものなのかを探り当てましょう。
