This course aims to deepen our understanding of the twentieth-century English novel by reading Joseph Conrad's masterpiece The Secret Agent (1907).
Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) is from Poland but well known as a representative English novelist in the modernist period. By reading his well-known political novel, The Secret Agent (1907), we will try to have a deeper understanding of the society and customs of England in the late nineteenth century. Also by following the actions of the spy hero Verloc, we will consider the chaotic political situation at that time when terrorist attacks by anarchists were frequent. In addition we will examine Conrad's ideas about profound questions like the meaning of life or love. Even though the setting and age in the novel are distant from ours, there must be universal insights into life that appeal to us today, and we will try to explore them.

This course aims to deepen our understanding of the twentieth-century English novel by reading Joseph Conrad's masterpiece The Secret Agent (1907).
Joseph Conrad (1857-1924)はポーランド出身ですがイギリス・モダニズムの代表的な小説家として知られています。この授業では彼の政治小説の傑作The Secret Agent (1907)を読むことを通じて、まず詳細に描かれている１９世紀末イギリスの社会や風俗について理解を深めます。また、無政府主義者のテロが起きた当時の混沌とした政治状況について、スパイである主人公Verlocの行動を追いながら考察してゆきます。さらに人生とは何か、愛とは何か、などの根本的な問題を、小説家Conradの世界観とともに深く検討してゆきます。時代と社会が違っても、現代を生きる私たちに通じる、人生への普遍的な洞察があるはずであり、それがどんなものなのかを探り当てましょう。
