This course will introduce students to the connections between Modern English and Old English, in addition to organizing their English language knowledge by reading texts related to the history of the English language.
Every word tells us something about development of the English Language. Students will conduct research into each word and its background through reading related chapters. In addition to reaffirming their knowledge of history of the English language, students will also begin to see the connections of each word to modern English. In this semester we will pick up the words related to the 5th to 18th century.

受講人数によっては、グループに分け、グループの中で発表者・司会者を決め、全員でディスカッションを行いながら、テキストを読み進めていくことを予定している。
英語の歴史に関連するテキストを読むことで、知識を整理することに加え、現代英語との繋がりを改めて実感することを目的とする。
This course will introduce students to the connections between Modern English and Old English, in addition to organizing their English language knowledge by reading texts related to the history of the English language.
それぞれの英単語には歴史が反映されていることが多い。そのような歴史を反映した単語を世紀毎に整理されているテキストを読みながら、1つ1つの単語の歴史から英語の歴史全般に至るリサーチを行っていく。これにより、英語史の知識を再確認すると同時に、英単語に含まれる歴史を見ることができる。今期は、5世紀から18世紀に関連する単語を見ていく予定である。
