Notes

【Course Objectives】

By the end of this course students will have acquired basic reading knowledge of Middle English texts and will be able to read Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales based on close reading. Students will also be expected to acquire a broader perspective regarding the cultural and social background of medieval Europe.

【Course Contents】

In this course we will closely read Chaucer's Canterbury Tales after learning the rudiments of Middle English as a written language. The classes consist mainly of close reading of the materials and interpretive discussions. We will often turn to literary sources, Roman de la Rose, for instance, which had a great influence on Chaucer's poems. Students will also examine the social and cultural contexts in which the Canterbury Tales was produced.
