備考/ NotesNotes |
From Howlin’ Wolf (“I Put a Spell on You”, 1956) to The Doors (“Riders on the Storm”,“ The End”) and from Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Joy Division & early New Order to Sisters of Mercy, in this course, members will listen to, read and analyze a broad selection of Gothic or Gothic-inspired lyrics from the 1950s to the 1980s. For the sake of comparison and contrast, songs by 80s Japanese Gothic bands Pale Cocoon, G-Schmitt, Iwamoto Kiyoaki and EP-4 will be analyzed and discussed. The emphasis will be on the historical contexts of when this type of music was created and its impetus for creation. Literary sources of some of the artists and their lyrical imagery / techniques will be given deep readings.
Course Contents Students must complete the readings, explore archival material on the web, and attend all lectures and seminar sessions. Written work will consist of:

4. An oral presentation of original research on one of the authors and/or stories discussed during the course.
