Notes

【Course Objectives】

The purpose is to facilitate English learning - listening, speaking, reading, writing - through various class activities. Students are also encouraged to explore the background knowledge of each story.

【Course Contents】

"The Baseman Room" was written by Graham Greene, and its protagonist was a nine-year-old boy who struggled to understand the adult world of hidden secrets. Roald Dahl's "The Way up to Heaven" describes a wife's revenge on her husband in a humorous way. "The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax" is a detective story about Sherlock Holmes's brilliant investigation into the mysterious loss of contact with an aristocratic woman. Katherine Mansfield's "A Cup of Tea" is about hypocrisy and class gap in human relationships. W. Somerset Maugham's "Masterson" has an ambiguous ending that echoes the protagonist's sense of loss and confusion as a white man living in Burma. Students are required to prepare for the assigned reading, participate in class activities, and write a short comment at the end of each class. An oral presentation (at least two minutes) is also required.
