Notes

【Course Objectives】

The purpose is to facilitate language learning -- listening, speaking, reading, writing -- through various class activities. The socio-historical background of each story will be explored to enrich the learning experience.

【Course Contents】

Kathryn Stockett's The Help is concerned with the economic and social hardship of black maids in deep American South in the 1960s. It is set in the Jim Crow era, and its female main characters build friendship across racial and class barriers. Jhumpa Lahiri's "Interpreter of Maladies" takes place in contemporary India, and the conflict of values between a native guide and a visiting Indian-American family is triggered by their different racial backgrounds. Students are expected to prepare the assigned reading, participate in class activities, write short comments, and give an oral presentation (2-5 minutes).
