Students will improve their communication skills in English by participating in group discussions in class based on questions accompanying their weekly reading assignments. They will also develop their writing skills in completing an essay of 1500 word based on the text studied in class.
The title of Tennessee Williams's play, The Glass Menagerie, describes the character Laura Wingfield's collection of tiny glass animals, which are as fragile as Laura herself. In 1937, as the effects of the Great Depression begin to fade, Laura's brother Tom Wingfield (who also acts as narrator of the play) works at a thankless job while their mother tries to find a suitor for Laura. As Tom dispassionately describes his life, he recounts an experience that was painful for his sister Laura and reveals that he has deserted his family. In examining the play we will explore themes such as abandonment, dreams and illusions, and living in the past. Students are required to prepare the assigned reading and participate in class activities. An oral presentation is also required.
