Notes

【Course Objectives】

The main goals of the course are to introduce and analyze how literary texts reflect and represent historical, social, political change in the lives of ordinary people; and to improve abilities in reading and interpreting complex texts in English, participating in discussions, and in writing essays.

【Course Contents】

In this seminar, we will read and discuss some key literary texts that mark Europe’s transition from the long 19th to the 20th century. This period of transition was marked in the broader European context by increasing urbanization, the spread of capitalism, and political turmoil caused by the intensification of European colonization. Writers of the period strove to represent how these changes affected regular people by focusing on daily life, particularly how even the smallest details can reflect larger historical movements.
