備考/ NotesNotes |
The main goals of the course are to introduce students to important cultural and historical changes in turn of the century Britain; improving abilities in reading and interpreting complex texts in English; participating in discussions; and in writing short essays.
In this seminar we will read one of the key British novels of the twentieth century, E. M. Forster’s Howards End. Published in 1910, Howards End deals with issues of class, nationality, status, and how these influence personal relationships. Because of the breadth and depth of its concerns, Howards End also gives a detailed and moving representation of British culture and society as it began the often painful transition from the 19th to the 20th century. We will read the novel slowly and carefully. Class discussions will focus on key questions or problems, with students giving short group presentations.
