【Course Objectives】

The objective of this course is to provide a comprehensive introduction to twentieth century British theatre, and in particular consider the literary, historical, and cultural background to one of the twentieth century's most influential playwrights - Harold Pinter (1930-2008). We will consider Pinter’s early masterpiece The Birthday Party (1957) and his later work Betrayal (1978) in detail to enable familiarity with Pinter’s archetypal characters and theatrical style. Further course objectives include improvement in discussion skills, and the acquisition of a wider analytical vocabulary.

【Course Contents】

This course will outline a general account of UK postwar drama and the London theatre scene before focusing on Harold Pinter's plays The Birthday Party and Betrayal. Close textual reading and in-class video study of these major achievements in modern drama will enable students to become familiar with the experimental style, specific characters, and language of one of the greatest postwar playwrights in English.
