The objective of this course is to continue discussion of the major area of revenge tragedy, and to provide the literary, historical, and cultural background to one of the seventeenth century’s most celebrated English playwrights - John Webster (c. 1578-c. 1632). We will consider John Webster's great play - The White Devil (1612) - in detail to enable familiarity with Webster's archetypal characters and theatrical style. Further course objectives include improvement in discussion skills, and the acquisition of a wider analytical vocabulary.
This course will provide an introduction to revenge tragedy, and focus in particular on the work of the English revenge tragedian, John Webster. Textual study of this major Jacobean playwright will enable students to become familiar with early modern English culture and the specific characters, plot, and poetic style of language of one of the greatest works by one of the most celebrated English playwrights.
