Notes

【Course Objectives】

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the major area of literary comedy, and to consider in particular two of the major comedies by William Shakespeare (1564-1616). Further course objectives include improvement in discussion skills, and the acquisition of a wider analytical vocabulary.

【Course Contents】

This course will provide introductory definitions of literary comedy before focusing on two of Shakepeare’s great plays: Twelfth Night (1601-1602) and The Merchant of Venice (1596-1598). Textual and in-class video study of these major comedies by one of the central figures in world theatre history will enable students to become familiar with early modern English culture and the specific characters, plot, and poetic style of language of two of the great works by the most celebrated English playwright.
