This course aims to develop a deep understanding of the diverse nature of the English language by examining its linguistic features and the social backgrounds of English-speaking regions from a historical perspective. Students will also learn how to apply knowledge and perspectives from the history of English to their everyday English study, and will develop the ability to address questions and issues related to English by drawing on an understanding of its historical development.
By tracing the history of the English language from its earliest periods, this course explores the historical contexts through which the distinctive features of modern English have been shaped. In the spring semester, students will learn the history of English from the period before its emergence through the modern era. In addition to studying the linguistic characteristics of English in each period, students will also consider the social backgrounds that influenced these features and changes, and will gain an understanding of how English came to be used as a lingua franca. The content of this course serves as a foundation for 文学講義2 (fall semester), which focuses on the history and characteristics of English outside the British Isles.

本講義では、英語の持つ多様な性質や特徴を深く理解することを目的に、英語の言語的特徴や英語が話されている地域の社会背景を歴史的視点から学習する。同時に、普段の英語学習に英語の歴史に関する知識や観点を活用する視点を学び、英語に関する疑問や課題について、英語史の知識を用いて自ら解決する力を養う。

古い時代から英語の歴史を辿っていきながら、どのような歴史的背景によって現代英語の特質が形作られてきたかを学ぶ。春学期は、英語が生まれる前から近代までの歴史を辿っていく。各時代に見られる英語の言語的な特徴だけでなく、その特徴や変化に関わる社会背景についても学習し、英語が世界の共通語として使われるに至った歴史を具体的な文献も参照しながら理解する。本講義の内容は、主にイギリス諸島の外に伝わった英語とその歴史や特徴について学習する文学講義２（秋学期）へと繋がる。
